About WalkUnderMTL
WalkUnderMTL is an independent, bilingual guide to Montréal’s Underground City (RÉSO). It is not affiliated with the Ville de Montréal, the STM, Tourisme Montréal or any building operator. Its goal is narrow: help a visitor get from one named place to another indoors, and be honest about what is not known.
Open the route plannerWhat the planner is built on
The planner uses a hand-built map of 51 places (métro stations, malls, food halls, hotels, venues) and 59 connections between them. 51 of those connections cite an operator source, such as an STM neighbourhood map or a building’s own access page. The other 8 are labelled in the planner as connections without a published source yet. It is not a surveyed floor plan: it does not know every corridor, level or door.
How walking times are estimated
Times come from straight distances between mapped places divided by 80 metres per minute, rounded up. Nobody walked them with a stopwatch. Crowds, escalators, closed doors and finding your way add time, so treat every figure as a rough lower bound.
What WalkUnderMTL does not confirm
Step-free access, live opening hours, elevator status inside buildings and temporary closures. 12 mapped connections run through office buildings that may close after business hours; routes that use them carry a warning. Where an operator says a link is closed, such as Bonaventure to the Bell Centre, the planner does not route through it.
How sources are checked
Each source shows the date it was last checked. Operator pages that change often (station access, venue access, baggage rules) are re-read on a weekly schedule, and pages are updated when a source changes. Photos come from Wikimedia Commons under their stated licences, with credits in the visitor guide.
Privacy
Saved routes, preferences and checked steps stay in your browser. The site records a small set of anonymous usage events, such as a route being created or the language being switched. Search text and your location are not included.
Before you go
- Follow building and RÉSO signs on site; they are more current than any map.
- If a door is closed, go up to the street and continue outside.
- For official information, use the Ville de Montréal, STM and venue websites listed in each guide.
